Compost For Soils

Compost for Soils is a national program designed to build and spread knowledge about the production, benefits and use of recycled organics (compost) in a variety of soils and applications. Compost for Soils started in South Australia with a focus on the benefits of using recycled organics in commercial horticulture and agriculture. It is now drawing on the outcomes of research and development from around Australia, including research on urban applications such as landscaping, topdressing and land rehabilitation.

Our philosophy: If you get the brown stuff right - the green stuff will follow. It's as simple as that.

We know that our clients can:
• Improve water retention;
• Improve plant vigor;
• Build better soil structure;
• Improve yields; and
• Suppress disease.

We want all of our clients to be using compost in their operations to help them improve their business.

We also know that compost can:
• Store carbon in the soil;
• Reduce nutrient flows into water ways, lakes and coastal waters;
• Reduce the need for chemical fertilisers;
• Reduce the need for irrigation;
• Reduce erosion and loss of top-soil; and,
• Restore and beautify degraded landscapes.

We want all of Australia to be using compost to help them improve our urban, rural and natural environments.

Compost Australia

Compost for Soils is a partnership between the Recycled Organics Industry and governments across Australia. This partnership has been created through Compost Australia, a national non-profit, member driven organisation that is the national body for the organics processing and recycling industry. The vision of Compost Australia is to have all organics properly processed and used.

To ensure that this vision is attained, Compost Australia has developed the following objectives:
1. Promote recovery of compostable organic materials.
2. Develop markets for compost products.
3. Develop and promote standards and certification.
4. Provide a national information network for the organics industry.
5. Identify and agree upon common organics industry priorities.
6. Inform and influence key stakeholders and decision makers.
7. Coordinate research and development nationally.

Compost for Soils and this website will help achieve many of these objectives.

Our national office is located in Burwood (Sydney) NSW and is supported by five state working groups.
